Start the New Year Right With a Well-Woman Exam

Whether thinking about having a baby or simply navigating the complexities of modern womanhood, prioritizing your gynecological health is essential. The new year is the perfect opportunity to take charge of your wellness, and a well-woman exam can help you do that.

Start the New Year with a well-woman exam if it’s been a while since your last appointment. In this month’s post, discover how a simple checkup can help women of all ages live healthier, happier lives.

Beyond your annual physical

While annual physicals with your primary care physician offer a comprehensive look at your overall health, well-woman exams provide a specialized focus on women’s unique needs. Women’s wellness visits at Florida Woman Care of Jacksonville go beyond the standard physical and typically include:

A detailed review of your medical history

Our team reviews your medical history with you, discussing past illnesses, surgeries, medications, and your menstrual cycle. They may also inquire about your family medical history, as certain conditions, like breast cancer or ovarian cancer, may have a genetic component. This visit is an ideal time to mention any new symptoms or concerns you may have, such as irregular periods, pelvic pain, or difficulty urinating.

Breast exam

Women over 40 should have a clinical breast exam every year, while women in their 20s and 30s should get one every one to three years or more frequently if they have certain risk factors for breast cancer. During this procedure, we visually inspect your breasts and feel for any lumps, abnormalities, or changes in the breast tissue. We may also check your lymph nodes in your armpits.

Pelvic exam

A pelvic exam is a routine part of a well-woman visit, especially for women between the ages of 21 and 65. During a pelvic exam, we use several techniques to assess the health of your external genitalia, or vulva, and internal reproductive organs, like your vagina, cervix, and uterus.

To get a closer look at your vagina and cervix, we use a medical instrument called a speculum that opens the vaginal walls, which also allows us to collect a sample of cells from your cervix for a Pap test. This simple test screens for cervical cancer and other potential issues.

Why well-woman exams matter

More than a routine checkup, a well-woman exam is an investment in your long-term health and well-being. Here’s why you should prioritize these annual appointments:

Early detection

Regular visits allow for the early detection of potential health issues, such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Early intervention increases the chances of successful treatment and improved outcomes.

Preventative care

Women’s wellness exams provide an opportunity for preventive care, screenings, and lifestyle counseling. By addressing health risks proactively, you can reduce the likelihood of developing serious medical problems.

Addressing reproductive concerns

These exams offer a space to discuss your reproductive health concerns, including birth control, fertility, and sexual health. Dr. McDyer and Dr. Suhrer can provide personalized advice and guidance.

Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Take an empowered, proactive approach to your health and get the quality care you deserve. Call Florida Woman Care of Jacksonville today or book an appointment online.
